Programming Basie
Few notes. Make them count.
Basie is a compiled language for Z80 machines. It checks every index, every conversion and every record's lifetime, without a garbage collector or wasted bytes. Each chapter is built around a complete CP/M program. Every program checks its own results as it runs, so a program that finishes has done what the chapter said it would.
You'll start with three numbers and a total. By the end you'll have a small utility that parses commands, allocates records from a fixed pool and reports what it did. Along the way you'll learn to ask four questions of any piece of data: what is stored, where it lives, who may change it and when access ends.
